O regresso dos peregrinos

Pilgrims return home
Hajj 2007 - Part IV

Despite having enjoyed the experience of working on the first phase of the Hajj, I didn't volunteer for the second phase - the return of the pilgrims to Nigeria - which would take place right after Christmas. I was going to have my university exams period which collided with the 2nd phase of the Hajj.

Against what was my usual procedure I completely emptied my travel suitcases - at least the cabin trolley had always something inside because our roster is mainly composed of standby periods. The truth was that with only one airplane in our fleet and being this a long duration set of flights - and still with a maintenance check (and cleaning...) to be performed after the Hajj - I would certainly be more than one month without flying.

The 26th of December, early in the morning, I was still sleeping when I received a call from the crewing department, asking me to be at the airport within two hours to be away for a 22 days period. I would be deadheading to Jeddah via London. I had only a few seconds to take my decision: if on the one hand I wanted to study for the exams, on the other hand it would be painful to be such a long time without flying... My instinct decided to say yes to the crewing department and then I started running like crazy and put everything again in the bags to be on time at the airport.
When I arrived at the airport, a sudden change of plans dictated that after all we would be leaving only on the following day in a position flight with our own aircraft which is always more comfortable for us, crew members.

And the 27th of December, CS-TMP took off in direction to... well, I really thought it was Jeddah! But 30 minutes after take-off I was surprised with the (good) news that after all we would go to Luxor first. Egypt and its ancient civilization have always fascinated me and Luxor was one of the cities that soon or later I would have to visit either while on work or by myself. But the report of our stay in Luxor will be written later.

When we finally landed in Jeddah for the second phase of the Hajj, it was a strange "déjà vu" feeling of being suddenly again in that land and that airport to which I thought I wouldn't return that soon.

We parked side by side with the L-1011-500 registered XT-BRK, now in service with Kallat Elsaker. This aircraft was originally delivered to TAP with reg. nr. CS-TEE. It was the first time I saw it with that new livery. Two stands farther it was also parked the L-1011 N194AT flying for Med-View Airlines, repeating its presence after the first phase.

In Jeddah, we stayed in the same hotel - the Radisson SAS in Madina Road. My crew started flying only the 3rd of January with a rotation JED-KAD-JED. It was more of the same... A few days later I also spotted TD-ADW from Privilege Jet. This one is also an ex-TAP aircraft (by that time with reg nr CS-TED).

The return flights to Jeddah, were always position flights without passengers on board. Whenever somnolence didn't beat me, I enjoyed contemplating "my" L-1011, the mighty CS-TMP. Whether it was those beautiful wings, those powerful engines or just that wide cabin, it was such a pleasure and a honor to fly as a professional on that airplane that I learned to love since my childhood...

And arriving at the airport we could appreciate some rarities like this one...

The second phase flights were much more complicated for us. Bad planning and airport functioning in Jeddah led to very long boardings (seven hours was a standard...). Pilgrims also brought each one a 5L jerrycan with Zamzam water that could not go on the side overhead bids because any spillage could lead to short-circuits in the PSUs. They also brought a huge amount of cabin luggage, including several examples of Quran books. I admire the devotion of these people but I also think this is clearly a money business...

In Jeddah, women boarded always in first place and this time they were more demanding: everybody wanted to go by the windows. There were no boarding cards, so it a was free seating situation. Pilgrims would enter through door L2 and we had to seat them from the last row to the front, row to row. But if they saw a window seat available more at the front they would try to occupy it. I could not lose control of the situation or the boarding would become a big chaos. In those situations, I always remembered a conversation with a colleague of mine telling me that they were used to have an authoritarian treatment from their husbands so I would put a serious face, fill my lungs with air and yell "TO THE BACK" pointing with my hands towards the rear of the airplane. And I must say it worked pretty well all of the times even though it was something that didn't please me to do.

For the Flight Crews it was also a demanding operation because they had to control carefully the amount of baggage that was loaded into the holds. If it was up to the handling staff only, they would fill the holds until the doors couldn't close. The bags were all very similar in size and very heavy, so the pilots would require the random weighing of sample bags and calculate the average weight and the maximum number of bags that should be loaded. All of this without taking into account the litters of water the pilgrims carried in big jerrycans to the cabin. But our L-1011 never showed signs of weakness when taking off. Sometimes I would comment with my colleagues the easiness of climb of our airplane even with a full load.

With passengers being boarded in Jeddah, tankering fuel for the return flight was not an option because of weight limitations. This was a problem because refueling in Kaduna, Minna and Kano was truly an improbable adventure.

Many Hajj stories are associated with the difficulty of the pilgrims using the aircraft facilities, I mean - the toilets. Although those type of problems didn't seem to happen that often (at least in my flights), I still have two situations to share that happened with me.

During one boarding (those loooong boardings of seven hours), one of the translators went to the aft galley asking us permission for a female pilgrim to use one of the toilets because "she has defecated in the seat". Of course our only reaction was to immediately allow the use of it. We didn't prevent anyone from using the toilets - that would be insane during those prolonged boardings. When the pilgrim abandoned the toilet (after more than 10 minutes inside) I went to check its condition and it was not with surprise that I found a whole abstract paint of brown all over the inside walls and the mirror. It was such a mess that I decided to lock that toilet, informing the Purser that even before take-off, one toilet was already out of service. But because the latches were really worn out, even if the flag showed OCCUPIED, it was easy to open the door just by rotating the handle and using some force to pull the door. And that happened with a pilgrim who didn't care about the OCCUPIED flag (or didn't understand it) and got inside that toilet. I tried to advise him but he was so fast that he didn't listen to me. I thought he would stay a maximum of three seconds inside but he spent some ten minutes there. When he left the toilet, I was shocked (well, positively) that he actually cleaned all that mess! I called the Purser again saying "Disregard last information, all five rear toilets available for the flight"!

The other story is a simple one. Just a lady that decided to pee in front of door R3, in the corner between the first right hand toilet and the fuselage. Because I wasn't there, a colleague told me in a funny way that my jumpseat area was contaminated but that she already poured coffee powder over it (and I must admit that this is a very effective solution).

Nessas alturas encostava imediatamente a porta.
During the Hajj flights, I noticed that many pilgrims didn't how to use the toilets. So whenever it was possible, we tried to give them a briefing before using the lavatories pointing the flush button, the tap water and the toilet paper. But this was a hard task, specially with the women because they started to immediately undress themselves as fast as they got inside and they didn't even care if the door was opened or closed. When this happened, the only thing to do was to close the door for them... Several times I noticed that many of them would pee seating towards the back of the toilet, contrary to what we are used to.
In this second phase of the Hajj we opted to close the water shut off valves to avoid flooding in the lavatories. And it was funny to see that many pilgrims would ask us where were the toilets because they wanted "to piss" and as soon as they noticed there was no water, they would give up from anything. In fact, most of them just wanted to take their "mandatory baths".

As a curiosity, here is the attempt to educate the pilgrims on how to seat properly on the toilet seat!

Most of the pilgrims returned with their health seriously affected after a long stay in Saudi Arabia, in conditions that we don't know. It was scary for us being inside a cabin with about 300 people coughing at the same time. We were allowed to used protective masks but I did it only once - it's not that practical and it was not elegant for the pilgrims.
With the news of a meningitis outbreak in Nigeria, our airline decided to pay all its crew members the vaccine against it.

Below, I'm showing some photos of one of our arrivals and disembark at Minna.

Descarregando - método no mínimo curioso...
Unloading the holds - curious method...

Even if I logged fewer hours in this second phase (we were four crews instead of just three of the first phase), I felt a lot more tired during this period. And Jeddah, after knowing it very well, is not that interesting with the majority of my colleagues spending their days inside the malls. The main meals were always at the hotel and the afternoon snack (chicken pita sandwich) at the Corniche zone.

However, I had good moments in Jeddah. Particularly when me and a colleague decided to leave the malls routine and see the typical markets and have a more cultural walk through the streets of Jeddah. We even found a monument with two canons with a legend stating that they were used to fight the Portuguese 500 years ago! It's amazing the fact that we reached so many places in the world during the Portuguese Discoveries era. I don't have any photos of it because I didn't expect to do something different that day.

Inside the hotel there was not much to do... We didn't have a pool (and perhaps the use of such a facility by our girls would be troublesome). The TV channels were also uninteresting.

On the window frame of my room I had this curious detail pointing to the right direction to where I should pray...

Despite the daily routine in Jeddah, we went a couple of days to a private beach where we could dive in the Red Sea! Those were pleasurable days and a place where the girls of our crews were allowed to strip down to their swimsuits, leaving for moments the uncomfortable abayas (of mandatory use in public places).

After some strange happenings that delayed our return to Portugal for one week, we were finally allowed to take a Lufthansa flight to Lisboa via Frankfurt. A few days earlier we were supposed to take a Swiss flight but everything aborted and we had to wait without knowing a precise date when that would happen. One set of the flight crews, instead of coming with us, flew our L-1011 to Amman for an upcoming A-check and cleaning of the aircraft.

Assim, fomos todos fardadinhos a bordo da Lufthansa como que a dizer aos nossos colegas da forma mais evidente "hello, here we are just in case you need nice ABP's or PSP's".
Because we entered in Saudi Arabia as crew members, we would have to leave the country with the same condition. So, instead of a casual outfit, we boarded the Lufthansa A330-300 (D-AIKB) with our Luzair uniforms, although technically we were just passengers (of course). It was a smooth 6-hour flight until Frankfurt.
During the flight I talked to a very kind Lufthansa colleague that wanted to offer me everything she had available: playing cards, games, pens and a champagne flute which I had to refuse do to the fact I was in my uniform and with my Crew Manager also on board.

Frankfurt Main

On the FRA-LIS leg, we flew this time on a Lufthansa A321-100 and we were served the following cold breakfast meal:

As a final statement, and despite this was a very demanding operation, in both physical and psychological terms, I enjoyed it very much in a positive way and I'm quite sure I will never forget this amazing experience.
A few days later, in a press store, I was leafing through an international magazine which had an article dedicated to the Hajj, when I suddenly saw a couple of photos of our airplane in Jeddah, took during a disembark. And suddenly some goose bumps hit me all over my arms' skin, at the same time I felt very proud.
